Deep Sorrow

Via Reuters, Sharon in 'critical condition' after stroke: source

The year has barely begun and the world has to contend with the implications of Mr. Sharon's grave illness. We pray that he recovers -- and brace ourselves for the terrorism that'll likely follow if he doesn't.

This is a very damaging development for Israel, a vital Indian ally.

"Israel, a vital Indian ally"

That was when NDA was in the govt. We can see whether Israel is still a vital ally of India if India sends some senior guy from the govt for Sharon's inevitable funeral.

anonymous: seems Israel is a strategic ally - regardless of the governments in each country. The differences (small ones) arise only the methods and degree of engagement. Too strong a confluence of national interests for rational governments to mess with.

Vital Ally, not so Vital Ally.
What we can all agree on is that India would be lucky to have a leader of Sharons calibre at the helm.

This might surprise you (or maybe not) that we too are suspicious of Mr. Netanyahu -- who is a smooth-talking opportunist, who'll court even the most extreme elements if that gets him top power. Not clear what his personal belief system is.

To be fair, he did (under US pressure) engage Mr. Arafat at Wye River plantation talks.

Best regards & Id Mubarak.
